Winter – Literal and of the Soul

Sometimes I despair of myself.  A whole weekend, a long weekend, and what have I done.  Nothing!

I’ve shuffled from one room to another endlessly, done a small amount of reading, watched some Dr Who on Sunday evening, taken a drive, visited my Mother.  Did I do anything I felt I should have?  like the housework, like making jewellery, like achieving anything?  NO I did not.

I don’t like it when my mood gets like this, listless, restless, empty and forlorn.  So much time passing, opportunities lost, war with myself of the “I should/I don’t want to” variety.  The garden is a mess, the lawn is shaggy, weeds throughout the path, and my Neat Freak personality has gone on an extended “I don’t care, not interested” holiday – most likely to somewhere with 24 hour sun.

Winter, time of frost and rain and grey.  Harbinger of SAD.  12 more days till the shortest day.

So, trying to end on an up note, here are some photos of this mornings frost.

  2. Its just three days that you let go
They won’t ruin your life you know!
But grab that SAD and chuck it out,
You don’t want it to stay about.
Its much too nasty to entertain,
To make you mis’ble is its aim.
Say if there is anything I can do
To help you let go of the blue.
I’ll hope tomorrow the sun will shine
Then you’ll feel that things are fine!

  3. I think your Mum’s onto something there. I’ve been having a bit of a ‘winter of the soul’ in recent months (and it’s summer over here…apparently!) – but I have found, at various times, that serving others and has helped both them and me. Gorgeous photos!

    1. Thank you, my Mum is wise. Focus is hard sometimes, but it does help to think of others. Thank you for your kind words.

  4. *hugs* I feel for you.. lack of sun is bad.. at least over here we have Christmas to get us through the murky, grey days. Maybe you could join the pagans and celebrate winter solstice?

Beating yourself up sucks – tell that inner critic to get lost – it’s something I fight on a regular basis. I’m not sure if it’s worse to be critical to yourself or have some one else be mean to you though…

  9. I like photos of Jack Frost as they remind me of cold frosty days with blue skies here in the UK, the kind where you can take a long walk and clear the cobwebs from the mind. Days like that usually help dispel SAD I’ve been told by a friend who suffers with it as well, so I hope the rest of your winter is filled with those kind of days and not the grey rainy ones we all too often get. Our longest day is coming up – after that, it’s all down hill for us.

    1. Funny how the world is split in two with the seasons. We will soon be rolling uphill 🙂

  10. At least you went out and braved the cold air for the lovely frost photos. I too have angst over not completing anything and I have had 4 days off this long, long weekend. Welcome to my world too. Tomorrow of course (another day off) I will run around like a mad fox caught in a trap trying to do everything in one day. Ive decided not to give myself grief and neither should you, go with the flow! 🙂

  11. Ah, I don’t think there are many people in this world who can NOT understand the feeling you describe here. I personally find that the best way is to really throw yourself into it and just let the world alone for a day or two and the chores be chores. They don’t run away. Sometimes, the soul and the body need rest and a general pause – from everything. And hey! The days will be longer and longer in a really little while! That is something to look forward to, isn’t it?

Also: beautiful pictures. Love them. 🙂
