Writing 101 – Day 13: Finding Acceptance (Part 2)

Today we are to expand on the post of day four which was started as a three part serial.  Luckily, todays prompt “Found” fits in quite nicely with where I left off last time – acceptance.

In my last post I wrote about Loss, in relation to time, age, youth.  It’s time to talk about finding acceptance.

I wouldn’t say that I have found acceptance, it’s something I struggle with often, but there are increasing moments, windows of clarity, when I can feel the peace that saying “this is how it is” provides. I know there is nothing that can be done about most of the things that I have lost, especially those things associated with getting older, so being able to find that calm moment is a release, a time to let go of all the unrealistic “wishes” about fabulous ways to turn back time, which only happens in the movies and the science fiction books anyway (oh how I do love science fiction, where you can be young for all your life).

Finding acceptance is not a static thing for me, it can be found, it can be lost, then found again.  Always it moves me a little bit closer to a better understanding of how I want to be, how to let go of control over something that is, essentially, uncontrollable, and just float along that river called “De Nile”.  Which is a little bit weird, but works for me – “if I don’t focus on it, I can accept that there is nothing I can do about”.

Whatever path you find to acceptance, may it bring peace to you.

  1. I think coming to term with our reality “acceptance” as you uniquely put it is that in the game of life, you don’t rule anything out. You gain some, you loose some. I hope an not off track?

    1. That is absolutely correct akeem, it’s all full of give/take, loos/gain.
Thank you for taking the time to read and reply.

  3. I read both your posts for this task, and understand only too well when the inside no longer matches what you see in the mirror. One day you have an old person’s skin and then one begins to think of fractured hips and nursing homes … but not yet for awhile, knock on wood. Acceptance is all one can do. I’m all for aging gracefully. I’m looking forward to what they throw us for the final of the trio. I say ‘us’ loosely as I’m way behind. 😀

    1. Yes, me too, haven’t completed anything between 9 and 12. Just lost interest in it for a bit.
I am for all for graceful, just not sure how that’s going to happen if I start kicking and screaming when “old age” comes knocking on my door more forcefully 🙂

  4. Hi Claudette, ‘old age’ for me? I’m not sure what age, old age is. My guess is that it is different for all of us. I have some friends in their 50’s who say they have reached old age, but only because of the way they live their life’s. Whereas, I also have friends in their late 60’s who consider old age is still a very long way off. They of course lead completely different lives to those of my friends in their 50’s who say they have reached old age.

    1. Hi Hugh, I agree with you, I think it is totally subjective to how we each “think”. I know some days I feel OLD, and some days I feel not old 🙂 Mind power, not body power mostly rules my consideration of it at the moment, but I can feel/see the changes creeping in.

  6. G’day Cloudette,
Acceptance can be a two sided sword, yes I accept I have had seventy birthdays, and my grand children think I came when the dinosaurs left, I myself go by my own internal almanac that tells me I am as young as I feel, and I don’t feel my use by date nearing as yet lol, does that mean I am in De Nile without a paddle hahahah.. enjoyed your story

    1. Absolutely not Muzzy, Haven’t seen you on the river anywhere in my travels. My Mum has just gone 79 and she is still as spry as the proverbial spring chicken, she puts me to shame (which is probably WHY I feel so old sometimes). Thanks for your wonderful comment.
