Driving to work thoughts

I saw a sign on one of the local churches driving through town this morning which really didn’t make much sense to me (and I read it 3 times to make sure what I was seeing actually computed in my brain) it said:

“Faith without evidence is just superstition”

I thought (religious) faith was more this definiton:

“strong belief in the doctrines of a religion, based on spiritual conviction rather than proof.”

This church usually displays a clever play on words/current happenings in their messages, so this one has been bugging me all day, is there some secret inverted* meaning that I missed?

*Writing this I just thought to read the message backwards:Β Β “Superstition just is evidence without Faith”Β Β – but that doesn’t even make sense because superstition usually doesn’t have any evidence!

“a widely held but irrational belief in supernatural influences, especially as leading to good or bad luck, or a practice based on such a belief.”

Oh well, just another small mystery of life I guess.

  1. You made me think about this and perhaps its semantics Perhaps they meant evidence rather than proof… eg scripture provides evidence that Jesus lived etc . Evidence points to a conclusion but may not be proof. There may not be enough evidence to satisfy the full jury of a fact but some of the jury may be persuaded by the evidence. ???

    1. mmm – interesting thoughts – not sure I am convinced, but I take your thoughts in good Faith πŸ™‚

  2. Doesn’t make sense to me either!
The Apostle Paul wrote to the church of the Hebrews:
“Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen”.
Surely if you have evidence, faith has been surpassed?

    1. It is quite strange – I am sure they do have another angle that I haven’t seen yet, perhaps there is a smaller subscript – I will have to look agin tomorrow when I dirve past.

  5. Sounds frighteningly like that church is trying to suggest that its doctrine is “evidence”. Misusing words to weaken the distinction between science and faith.

    1. I’m not sure where they were going with this one, they are normally quite tongue in cheek. I feel I am missing the hint – probably something local that prompted it.

      1. That’s good to know. A lot of our churches are beginning to get quite fundamentalist and anti-science in their messaging.

  6. This stumped me too until I realized it had to be a coded message. Have you seen any spies lurking lately? Or nuns who look like Whoopi Goldberg?

    1. Um, nope, don’t think so. But I will keep an especially sharp eye out when I drive past again this week. πŸ™‚

  7. I’m not a fan of church signs for this reason. Too often their intended reason (or sense of humor) misses the mark.
As for where they were aiming with this one? No idea. I’m going with WD. It must be code.

    1. it really has me flummoxed, they are normally very easy to get the meaning of, fairly witty, and good play on words – bit entertaining really. But this one – just head scratch material.
