Happiness is a morning walk with a Platypus

When I walk in the morning I often see the platypus swimming in the creek, about halfway through my walk, whihc makes it a nice place to stop for a minute or so and just contemplate how beautiful Mother Nature can be.  Even though I see them fairly often, they never cease to give me a sense of peace and happiness when I spot them in the water splashing around.

Last week there were 2, parent and offspring I think, and the little one was scratching their back flank, which was causing him to go round and round in circles on his side in the water, it was so funny.

This morning I took my phone and got a short video, but I can’t upload it here as I have a free WP site which doesn’t allow me too.  Instead, I have posted it on my instagram account, you can also find the link at the bottom of my website home page of,  if you would like to watch it.  (I think you might have to be on instagram (which is free) to see it though, so that might not work if instagram isn’t your thing.

If you are not familiar with a platypus, they are 1 of the 2 uniquely Australian monotremes (mammals who lay eggs) – the other being an Echidna (also a favourite of mine, you can read about my Echi adventure here).

    When I was a little girl I collected ‘Britains’ zoo animals and I had two tiny platypus called platy and puss rather imaginatively (not) … I absolutely loved them even though they were the size of my baby finger nail – but I had never seen a film of a real one. Thank you so much for showing me this beautiful creature …. I loved the film …. so tranquil and sparkly and that glossy little coat. Just thank you.

            Actually he says that Australia is on the cards before he retires …. I would love it! Though saying Australia is clearly quite broad. I know people in Melbourne, Perth and Hervey Bay …. quite far apart, yes? But if I get there, you will be getting a knock on the door (you can hide under the table if this is a terrible thought!)

              it is a lovely thought – and, let’s face it, Tasmania is the BEST bit of Australia (unless you have a thing for Deserts, we don’t have any of them). 🙂

                My brother (lives in Perth) loves Tasmania …. I’ve told him he should retire there as they take every opportunity to go. This would make everything even more convenient 😉

                  Yes, he could move to Perth, Tasmania – although that is up North-ish, and the Huon Valley is a much nicer place in my biased opinion. Encourage him, a lot!

                    I shall. There’s no need for him to be in Perth once he retires and I am sure his children would rather he and their mum wasn’t right on top of them …. this is my theory 😉

    I don’t have an Instagram account but I was still able to view your video. It would be wonderful heading off for a walk knowing you were likely to see a platypus, the only ones I’ve seen in the wild were at Canarvon Gorge.

      Good to know that you could see it. I actually used to have one in my section of the creek boundary at one stage, but these ones are only 10 minutes walk through the park, sot it’s a great reason to walk there.
