“On this Day” Repost – The Dog

Facebook has one good feature – “On This Day”, and it’s reminded me why I’m feeling a bit …”off” … today.  My original post can be found here.

*************************

The dog takes me for a walk,
pulling against the leash,
strong and determined,
straining to break free.

We only walk in winter,
the dog and I,
weather grey and gloomy,
under short day skies.

My dog is black.

  1. First of all, I send you sunshine and warmth and the deep hope that your black dog evaporates and goes back to his kennel. Secondly, I must tell you that I consider that to be a wonderful poem. Really simply lovely. Thank you.

    1. Sorry for the delay in replying – life intervened. Thanks you for your lovely compliment, and I am happy to report that the black dog has wandered on the edges mostly. Soon the shortest day will be done, and that always calls him away when the light emerges.

  3. A black dog followed me around when we lived in another state, where the weather was gloomy for long stretches of time. I think he would have been easier to handle if I recognized him for what he was. Hope that’s the case for you. ❤️

    1. Sometimes they masquerade as other things, they are sneaky black dogs. These days I can tell when he is approaching, which makes it easier to run like heck in the other direction, or find some dog treats. 🙂

  4. But if we don’t walk with a variety of dogs, how will we know which one is the one we really want?

    1. Mmm, yes, that is a point of view. But I’m damn sure that I do not want the fog-skulking, soul sapping black dog of doom to be my eternal companion. 😉 I’m thinking cute little fluff ball that sits on my lap purring – but not a cat as I am allergic to them – type of dog.

  5. Oh, we all walk with those black dogs occasionally. I hope you’ve managed to shake him loose. May those clouds shift. 💕

    1. I did, they have, thanks. I know he will be back, but that’s ok, I can always leave some nibbles out to pacify him 🙂
